After a quick spell in the UK earlier in the year supporting PVRIS on their first UK headline tour, K.Flay has been turning heads left right and centre. Now she’s back and ready to take on this years Reading & Leeds Festival! We caught up with K.Flay to chat about her time in the UK and all things Reading & Leeds!

Hi K.Flay! How has 2016 been so far for you?

So good. it’s been this great mix of touring and spending time off the road. i’ve been able to work on new music and do other important things like find a place to live, set up my home studio, read a bunch of books.

We caught you supporting PVRIS here in the UK earlier in the year, how was that? Any particular highlights from the tour?

I loved that tour. the whole PVRIS crew is like family, so every night was just so fun. london was a real highlight, glasgow as well. both of those shows the crowd was crazy.

You got a very welcoming reception; do you jump at the chance to come back here as often as you can?

Definitely. I love the spirit of the live scene in the UK.

How do the UK crowds differ to those back home in America?

I think there’s a sense of liberation whenever you’re outside of your home, whatever you construe that to mean. so for me, being away from the US, i feel a real license to let loose, to think less, to be more in the moment on stage. and i think that has a palpable effect, when you’re performing without self consciousness. so it’s hard to say whether the crowds differ or i differ or everything differs. probably something in between all of that.

You have quite a unique style of music, who are your key influences?

All over the map, really. metric, outkast, kid cudi, vampire weekend, early liz phair. i just like shit that’s lyrically honest and a bit weird.

Reading & Leeds festival is around the corner, what does it mean to you to be a part of such an iconic UK festival?

I’m so excited. for me, it’s an opportunity to be a part of something with a lot of history. which is always very meaningful.

What can we expect from your set, any surprises?

new music 🙂

Who are you looking forward to seeing over the R&L weekend?

Alunageorge, Lewis del mar, Twenty One Pilots, Foals.

If you could pick three headliners for the ultimate Reading & Leeds Festival line up [excluding yourselves!] who would they be and why?

kanye west, sia & daft punk. Because it would be really good.

Finally, what are your plans for the end of 2016?

more touring, more music!

You can catch K.Flay on the Radio 1 Xtra stage at this years Reading & Leeds Festival over the August bank holiday weekend!
