helping the homeless

The ONE BIG FAMILY – HELPING THE HOMELESS charity was founded in August 2015 in Chatham, Kent, by Liz and Darren Shaw, with the aim of serving the Homeless in the Medway and London areas. Their aim, alongside providing two soup kitchens, one in Chatham and one in Victoria, is to provide those in need with essential items – clothing, underwear, hats, gloves, socks, hand warmers, hand cream, lip salve, toiletries, sanitary products, blankets, roll mats, sleeping bags, food, water – and, importantly, time for a chat, a hug, a smile.

As they say themselves: “We do not claim to be able to solve the Homeless crisis, but we can make life a little more bearable for those in need”. Their tireless work has recently seen them nominated for the Pride in Medway Award 2017 for their contribution to the community.

Having been fans of EMBRACE for many years, Liz and Darren have become friends with numerous similarly minded fans of the band. With the obvious West Yorkshire roots of EMBRACE, and the support of the band themselves, it become logical to launch a Northern branch of the charity in 2017, now known as the ONE BIG FAMILY – HELPING THE HOMELESS – YORKSHIRE, co-ordinated by Jayne Pugh.

“We are up and running,” says Jayne. “We are still finding our feet here in Yorkshire but we completed our first drop in Huddersfield in early January. We gave out sleeping bags, warm clothing, hats, gloves and provided warm drinks and snacks to those in need, and sat with and chatted to those who wanted company. A kind word goes a long way.”

Whilst everyone involved with ONE BIG FAMILY donates their time and their love willingly and without payment, helping provide essentials for Homeless people is an expensive business, particularly in cities such as Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield, Leeds and York where the problem shows no sign of abating. One of the ways of combating the financial difficulties is clearly fundraising, hence the announcement of the MUSIC FOR KITS fundraiser to be held at The Lending Room at Leeds Library on Woodhouse Lane on Saturday 11 March 2017.

Headlining will be ONE SIDED HORSE, the brainchild of MARK WHITESIDE, and radically different to his alter-ego as drummer and singer with EVIL BLIZZARD where he haunts audiences from the back of the stage. With a voice somewhere between Scott Walker, Nick Cave and Johnny Cash, and a collection of songs that are both breathtaking and devastatingly beautiful, ONE SIDED HORSE will appear live with four-fifths of EMBRACE: Richard McNamara on guitar; Mickey Dale on keyboards; Steve Firth on bass; and Mike Heaton on drums. The debut ONE SIDED HORSE album will be released this year.

Also playing are Bradford four-piece GLASS MOUNTAIN, whose debut GLACIAL EP last year earned the support of Clash Magazine and Tom Robinson at BBC Introducing, and saw them walk away with Best Video of the Year at the Leeds Music Video Awards. Having played The Secret Festival and Bingley Music Live last year, December saw them round off the year in style by supporting EMBRACE on their full UK tour. They’re a staggering proposition live and are now preparing for their second release, the two track COWBOY SONG | MORE THAN THIS single.
