Fudge. – Public Disorder at Secret Gig

On Friday 29 March, Leeds four-piece FUDGE. played the latest of their secret gigs in secret locations, which lasted roughly seven minutes before being stopped by the local constabulary due to public safety issues. The venue could hold approximately 100 people but, shortly before the band were due to play, official estimates suggested that nearly 1500 were trying to get in. How they all knew about it, and how they all got there, is anyone’s guess but, quite possibly also due to uncertain licensing laws, the gig had to be pulled. The police were called, a number of people were apprehended but later released, and happily the evening remained good-hearted without further incident.

FUDGE. are now rethinking their policy of secret gigs, whereby their mailing list is sent the date and the vaguest of clues about the venue 48 hours beforehand. The band are aware that the events on Friday could have become very messy – messier than normal – and they’re grateful that nobody was injured and a further announcement will be made in due course.

In the meantime, the next official date by the band is a headline show at LEEDS HYDE PARK BOOK CLUB on SATURDAY 25 MAY; a venue that, with its 150-ish capacity, is clearly too small. Having sold out the pre-sale ticket allocation via the mailing list, the general sale allocation has now been released and is available as follows:

The band’s previous official date was the launch night for their second single, NOT A THREAT JUST A WARNING, at the 360 Club at Leeds Lending Room in February. In FUDGE. parlance it “went off”; it got messy and dangerous and exhilarating. It also saw the ‘sold-out-doors-locked’ signs before the first support had finished in a futile attempt to prevent anyone else getting in, with a huge ticketless crowd left in the street outside.
